Celebrate our Superheroes!

On February 7, 2004, over 50 dogs gathered at the Lucky Labrador Brew Pub for a "Superheroes" celebration. What could these and 200 other dogs have done that is so deserving? They are all volunteer canine blood donors for DoveLewis. Their willingness, with the support of their human counterparts, to donate blood four times a year allows the Portland community to have a safe and constant supply of much needed canine blood. Last year DoveLewis provided 814 canine transfusions.

To make the experience rewarding, each dog gets a toy with every donation, as well as lots of cookies. Two young girls wanted to help DoveLewis and offered to organize a toy drive for the blood donor dogs. Alyssa DeWeese, age nine, and Paige LaFlamme, age eight, collected over 150 dog toys as well as a $100 financial contribution. (See photos below) Their effort more than replenished the "toy box" and will undoubtedly please many donor dogs.

There is, of course, also a need for cat blood. Last year DoveLewis provided 224 feline transfusions. Where does this blood come from? Mostly from the nine cats who live at DoveLewis' two hospitals. These frisky felines are typically rescued strays that are treated for whatever ailment brought them to the Hospital. For two years they live with and entertain the staff, donating blood as needed, before being adopted to a permanent home.

Do you think your dog could be a good blood donor? Call the Hospital for more information at (503) 228-7281.

A final thank you to Gary, our generous host and owner of the Lucky Lab, who provided his back patio to us to help us ensure yet another successful DoveLewis event.
