Our Teaching Mission
Supporting the veterinary community goes beyond partnering on local cases. We extend our teaching mission outside of our hospital walls with educational opportunities to advance the level of veterinary care available to animals worldwide. See how.
DoveLewis is proud to offer unparalleled teaching opportunities, including internships, externships, and online training. With our expansion into becoming a state-of-the-art veterinary medical campus, we’re advancing our mission to provide world-class training and elevate veterinary care worldwide.
DVM Internships
As part of the Veterinary Internship & Residency Matching Program (VIRMP), we’re proud to host interns every year. Each intern at DoveLewis rotates through all departments of our emergency and specialty services.
DVM Externships
Fourth-year students practice their knowledge and clinical skills under the direction of our doctors. Externships are available to fourth-year veterinary students currently enrolled in an accredited college of veterinary medicine. Externs must be eligible to work in the United States. This is a 40-hours-per-week commitment. Externships are scheduled for a two-week period of time and start on every other Monday. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis and positions are available throughout the year excluding the end of June and December.

Technician Externship
Each term, we accept two students from the Portland Community College (PCC) Veterinary Technology program and one student from a different technician program. Technician externships are unpaid and typically last six to eight weeks depending on your program’s requirements. A technician extern must be eligible to work in the United States and be insured independently or through their school. Externs must also provide their own housing accommodations (though a list of housing options can be provided upon request).
